Make sure you mix sounds good enough on it’s own before submitting. Do not submit a project and think that the mastering process itself is what will bring the track to life. While mastering is good for putting that final shine on the project, it is really more about maintaining the original sound while beefing up it's loudness. Leave plenty of headroom in your final mix to allow for the mastering tools to do their work. Make sure to take off any plug in on your master that is purely there for loudness. The better your mix is, the better the master will turn out.
